If We Were Butterflies

poem 2025

Displayed by the Saint Paul Saints in their Poetry Garden

If we were butterflies

Would we discriminate against the monarch

For its brilliant orange colors?

Would we hate moths?

What lengths would we go to

To keep the pollen only for ourselves?

How would we treat our beautiful, delicious flowers,

That hold the aroma we desire?

What would we do with our precious few weeks of our lifespan?

Create chaos by knowingly flapping a wing in the wrong direction?

Or maybe,

Just maybe,

Make the world a better place,

Fulfill our purpose,

Float gracefully in the wind, respecting nature, and wishing each other well.
